Introduction to Buddhism


This is an introductory course, which presents the basis of Buddhist philosophy and is aimed at the complete beginner. No previous knowledge of Buddhism or of meditation is required.

The essential points of the teachings transmitted by Buddha Shakyamuni 2500 years ago will be presented during the 2 days of the course.

This course will be taught by Sixte Vinçotteand includes teaching sessions and short experiential meditation sessions as well as discussions.

Topics addressed:


  • The life of Buddha, the similarities between ouf life and the life of Buddha, how does Buddha reply to the questions about the meaning of life that are asked by all.
  • The Four Noble Truths.
  • The teachings of the Buddha presented in stages as a guide to a personal practice…. where to start, what follows etc.
  • What does it mean to be a Buddhist, "an inner being"
  • The characteristics of the Buddhist path, the three principal aspects of the path.
  • The different forms of Buddhism: theravada, mahayana, vajrayana, zen.
  • The different schools of Tibetan Buddhism: Gelugpa, Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya
  • A short history of Buddhism.
